Lower Austria in Private

"Lower Austria in private – Your films write history" was the motto of the appeal to donate old 8/16 mm films, initiated in 2013 by Lower Austria and the Film Archives Austria. All across the country, analog moving pictures were collected and archived.

Village life 80 years ago in Waldviertel, Wachau tourists in the period between the two world wars, everyday life under the Nazi regime, films about soldiers returning from war and post-war reconstruction, a Waldviertel weekly newsreel produced for many decades, the last horse and cart in Weinviertel – these and many more valuable cinematic chronicles of contemporary history and everyday culture were presented to Lower Austria and the Film Archive Austria during the “Lower Austria in private – your films write history” appeal. The objective of the nationwide appeal was to preserve the narrow, analog films in the Film Archive for posterity and to make them available to the public. The contributors received a free, digitalized DVD of their films as a thank-you.

The appeal surpassed all expectations: 70,000 films - more than 7,000 hours of material - were collected, setting the cornerstone for an amateur film archive unique in all of Europe. Some of the footage contains never-before cinematically documented memories of the cultural and contemporary history of this land.

The sensational public response and the media’s huge interest in the collection campaign confirm that amateur film is being re-discovered as a cultural phenomenon. On this page, we will keep you updated about the progress of the digitalization work, the results and presentation projects in connection with “Lower Austria in private.”
